Jimmy Kimmel Comes Back

Jimmy Kimmel was back behind the desk at Jimmy Kimmel Live! on Tuesday, just six days after ABC suspended production of the late-night show over controversial on-air remarks about the assassination of Charlie Kirk.

Kimmel opened the broadcast with an emotional statement, saying it was never his intention to make light of a tragedy. He thanked his fellow late-night hosts for their support — and added that he was equally grateful for viewers who don’t share his views but defended his right to express them.

ABC and parent company Disney said they decided to pause the show last week “to avoid further inflaming a tense situation.” After several days of private conversations with Kimmel, the network announced his return. The brief suspension and fast reinstatement became a flashpoint in Hollywood: more than 400 actors, writers, and producers signed an open letter defending Kimmel and warning that silencing comedians sets a dangerous precedent for free expression in entertainment.

Kimmel closed his remarks by downplaying the show’s importance compared to the bigger principle at stake: “What is important is that we get to live in a country that allows us to have a show like this.”
