Lane Kiffin is on the move again, this time trading Oxford for Baton Rouge in the biggest coaching shakeup of the college football season. After guiding Ole Miss to an 11–1 record and the program’s first likely College Football Playoff berth, Kiffin announced Sunday that he’s leaving the Rebels to become LSU’s next head coach.
Kiffin called the decision “difficult,” saying he had hoped to stay on the Ole Miss sideline through the postseason. But athletic director Keith Carter rejected that request, even after players reportedly asked for Kiffin to finish the playoff run. With that, last Friday’s Egg Bowl victory became his Rebels finale. Ole Miss immediately promoted defensive coordinator Pete Golding to lead the team.
The move caps a remarkable tenure: three straight double-digit win seasons, five bowl trips, and the best Ole Miss campaign in more than 60 years. But Kiffin said the switch to LSU was ultimately a “family decision,” shaped in part by conversations with mentors Pete Carroll and Nick Saban. LSU, which fired Brian Kelly in October, framed Kiffin as the perfect modern fit: creative, adaptable, and ready to restore the Tigers to the sport’s elite.
The switcheroo comes just as the postseason picture sharpens. Ole Miss needed an Auburn upset of Alabama to reach the SEC title game on Saturday; however, the Crimson Tide survived, leaving the Rebels waiting for their CFP fate ahead of the December 7 selection show.
