We’re just about halfway through football season, and everything about Week 9 in the NFL felt like a playoff preview: chaotic finishes, player breakouts, and contenders separating from pretenders.
Caleb Williams delivered his first signature “NFL classic,” ripping a 58-yard TD with 17 seconds left to save a Bears collapse in Cincinnati. Chicago (now firmly in the NFC playoff mix) rolled up 576 yards and 283 on the ground; Cincinnati, meanwhile, has dropped two heartbreakers in a row and sits on the wrong side of the AFC bubble.
Elsewhere, the Vikings sent a message in the NFC North, bullying Detroit as J.J. McCarthy looked poised in his return. Carolina stayed frisky with another Rico Dowdle takeover and a statement defensive bounce-back at Lambeau. Denver won yet another fourth-quarter fight as the Broncos keep pace in the AFC race. The Bills shut down Mahomes to stay in the top tier, the Seahawks torched Washington behind a flawless Sam Darnold half, and the Jaguars survived OT chaos in Vegas (including a record 68-yard FG) to remain a threat in the AFC South.
Emerging picture: Bears and Vikings rising in the NFC; Broncos and Bills gaining separation in the AFC; Bengals in full panic territory; and Seattle-LA shaping up as a heavyweight NFC West sprint.
