Hollywood’s Latest Act

Hollywood has long leaned on remakes, sequels, and prequels, but now it’s doubling down with straight-up rereleases.

In August, theaters brought back Black Swan, Jaws, Clue, and Tim Burton’s Batman films. September featured The Breakfast Club, Toy Story, and Apollo 13, while October will resurrect Casper and Twilight. Even Avatar: The Way of Water — a sequel that hit theaters in 2022 — is making a return ahead of the next installment.

Studios aren’t only after nostalgia; traditional revenue streams like DVD sales and TV rights have dwindled, theaters have more open slots with fewer wide releases, and well-timed classics can boost box office on slow nights or months. Universal alone has at least a dozen rereleases planned this year, up from four in 2024 and two in 2023.

Premium formats and special events are giving old favorites a new edge: Black Swan took over 200 IMAX screens for its 15th anniversary, while Las Vegas’ Sphere pulled in $65 million with a 4D Wizard of Oz run and Twilight toured 60 cities with a live band. In short, Hollywood is betting that if it worked once, it can probably work again — and again.
